UniCities: Energy Resilience Lab. A New Level of Energy Sustainability for Ukraine
The UniCities project team from Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute took part in a unique training program held in Mannheim, Germany, from November 4 to November 7, 2025. It focused on developing practical knowledge and competencies in cogeneration, energy efficiency, and autonomous energy supply.
This event marked a significant milestone in the development of the Energy Resilience Lab, a modern laboratory being established at the Energy Decarbonization Center and the Energy Innovation Hub of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute (KPI).
The primary mission of the laboratory is to train a new generation of specialists capable of working with mobile cogeneration systems, as well as mastering the principles of decentralized and backup energy supply.
The Energy Resilience Lab is being developed with the support of RSE, a Czech company that is a leading producer of mobile cogeneration solutions. The laboratory will become the first educational platform in Ukraine where students and professionals can work directly with mobile cogeneration stations. They will also learn the principles of autonomous and backup power systems and explore practical cases of implementing RSE technologies at critical infrastructure facilities — from hospitals to frontline communities.
According to the participants, the training in Mannheim not only deepened their knowledge in the field of energy efficiency but also provided unique hands-on skills that will soon contribute to strengthening Ukraine’s energy resilience in the face of current challenges.
The establishment of the Energy Resilience Lab marks a significant step toward enhancing Ukraine’s energy independence and the resilience of its critical infrastructure. It is also an important contribution to preparing specialists capable of implementing innovative technologies for the sustainable recovery of Ukraine.
