Expanding horizons: Cooperation with DGNB for the sustainable future of Ukraine

Successful partnerships are essential to achieving our common goal, the smart transformation of Ukrainian cities and communities. The Green Transformation and Climate Neutrality Center of ISTU, established as part of the international project UniCities, actively shares this opinion and is expanding its network of like-minded associates and partners.

March 19, 2025 marked a significant event: a delegation from the Ukrainian Green Building Council (UGBC) and the German Green Building Council (DGNB) visited the Academician Yuriy Bugay International Scientific and Technical University and the Green Transformation and Climate Neutrality Center. The meeting was a significant step towards introducing advanced sustainability standards in Ukrainian cities and implementing successful international practices.

During the meeting, the Center, UGBC, and DGNB representatives discussed opportunities for cooperation in sustainable development, education, research, and certification of sustainable projects. They also discussed the state of the market and opportunities for adapting EU rules and recommendations on sustainable development in Ukraine based on the DGNB’s International Sustainability Assessment System, including the Level(s) and EU Taxonomy (ESG) schemes.

As part of the cooperation, the Center will have access to DGNB University Cooperation training materials, which allows it to integrate advanced approaches to planning climate-neutral cities, buildings, districts, and infrastructure facilities into the educational process. Students and teachers will be able to deepen their knowledge in the life cycle management of buildings, sustainable certification, and urban adaptation to climate change.

Cooperation with the DGNB opens up prospects for participation in international projects, exchange of experience, and integration into a global network of universities working on sustainable development. This initiative allows interaction with leading European educational and research institutions, such as RWTH Aachen, Politecnico di Milano, Technical University of Berlin, and others.

The Green Transformation and Climate Neutrality Center believes that the newly formed partnerships will contribute to developing effective models of climate-neutral development of Ukrainian cities and communities, ensuring a harmonious balance between urbanization, ecology, and quality of life!
