Science and innovation — brave steps towards urban transformation

The UniCities project continues its journey towards creating climate-neutral and sustainable cities, in particular through the active participation of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute (KPI). As part of the scientific and technical work commissioned by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute has achieved significant results in the development of intelligent energy supply systems for buildings.

A prototype of an intelligent low-temperature building heating system based on a condensing modular boiler has been installed at the Center for Energy Decarbonization at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute. This system, developed in cooperation with the Ukrainian manufacturer LLC ““JV” “UKRINTERM”” from Bila Tserkva, is a key element in reducing emissions and improving the energy efficiency of buildings.

The following results were achieved as part of the second stage of work:

  • Software for a programmable logic controller (PLC) was created, which provides local control, collects data from sensors, and transmits it to the analytics system.
  • Design documentation was developed for the hardware and software complex of an intelligent building heating system.
  • Software for an industrial computer has been created that serves as a data hub, archiving, and analyzing the state of the equipment.
  • Software visualization tools were developed to enable operators to interact with the monitoring and analytics system.
  • A prototype of the heat supply system was manufactured, including a modular condensing boiler house with a digital copy of the system.

The demonstration of the practical implementation of innovative technologies in the field of energy efficiency and decarbonization, namely the intelligent building heating system, is an example of how science and engineering can contribute to the transformation of our cities.

It is worth reminding that Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute is part of the UniCities project consortium. More than 10 Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute employees are actively involved in the development of scientific and technical solutions that make cities more sustainable and environmentally friendly.

The introduction of an intelligent building heating system is a significant step towards a climate-neutral future. Together with our partners, we continue to work on creating sustainable cities where science, education, and innovation serve as the basis for improving the quality of life.
