UniCities: Decarbonisation without borders

The team of experts from KPI Energy Decarbonization Center, established within the UniCities project, took part in a working visit to the Czech Technical University.

The event was organised in partnership with the Department of Automation of Energy Processes and the Association of Engineers for Sustainable Energy Technologies of Ukraine, under the Erasmus+ programme.

The purpose of the visit was an in-depth exchange of experience in the development and operation of biomass-based cogeneration plants operating on the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC). Such plants enable the simultaneous production of electricity and heat from renewable sources, such as wood chips or agricultural residues, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional energy technologies.

During the meeting, Czech colleagues shared practical expertise covering all stages of creating such systems — from design and selection of optimal feedstock to the specifics of automation and operational optimisation. Special attention was paid to issues of energy efficiency, safety, and the economic feasibility of implementing such solutions in urban energy systems.

The visit concluded with a tour of an operating cogeneration facility, where Ukrainian specialists were able to see how theoretical principles are implemented in real production. They also received answers to practical questions regarding the operation and maintenance of the equipment.

As a result of the meeting, the parties agreed to jointly develop and implement similar energy solutions in Ukraine, involving experts from Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and the Ukrainian enterprise “Ukrinterm.”

The Energy Decarbonization Center, established within the UniCities project, is actively building partnership networks to foster the introduction of innovative technologies for climate-neutral and sustainable cities in Ukraine and across Europe.
