Zaragoza’s community forest: inspiration and sustainability

On the path to sustainable development and adaptation of cities to modern challenges, the UniCities team is constantly looking for innovative projects that combine environmental care with comfort for residents. One of these inspiring examples is the Zaragoza Community Forest. This ambitious greening project expands green space within the city and provides the community with a new space for recreation, learning, and integration.

The Community Forest in Zaragoza, also known as the Forest of Dreams, embodies a new approach to urban greening. The idea was to create a large green space in the city’s heart that would serve as a recreational area for residents of all ages and as a backdrop for environmental and educational initiatives. This project results from the municipality’s active cooperation with NGOs, businesses, and interested citizens, united by one goal: to make the city greener, cleaner, and more sustainable. Launched in 2021, it has a municipal budget of over €10 million and constantly attracts grants from national and European framework programmes.

Covering more than 700 hectares, the community forest can absorb significant amounts of carbon dioxide and stabilize the local microclimate, which is critical in climate change.

Such projects are important not only for a particular city. They become an example for other urban communities.

For example, Amsterdam’s Green Wave Project aims to create bicycle and pedestrian paths among green spaces covering key city areas. The project also includes work with biodiversity and creating conditions for attracting beneficial insects and birds to urban spaces.

The Milano Green Belt project is also interested in sustainable urban greening. It is an ambitious project to green the surrounding areas of Milan, aimed at creating biological corridors, reducing air pollution, and combating climate change. Milan also supports the Bosco Verticale initiative, where trees are planted on the facades of high-rise buildings, creating an innovative green space in the city’s heart.

By implementing similar initiatives, cities can significantly improve the quality of life of their residents, reduce the impact of climate change, and enhance biodiversity. Community forests and other green spaces can improve physical and mental health and promote social cohesion by providing a place to interact, learn, and relax.

The interest in green development projects further proves the relevance of climate change adaptation strategies. Zaragoza’s community forest is an example of how urban policy and strategic vision can transform a space into a truly environmentally friendly and attractive area for people.

The UniCities project is inspired to share successful cases, so cities can adopt the best sustainable development practices!
